The Vision of OneOneThree
We want to establish a house of hospitality, a 4-5 bed accommodation project for people who are trapped in homelessness here in Brent. We want this project to be funded by the community, through regular donations and one off gifts. Our target group is primarily individuals with no recourse to public funds and young asylum seekers who would benefit from a stable place and a supportive community to study and work, to build their futures.
Many people, young and old, are caught in the downward spiral of insecure accommodation and rough sleeping in London. In Brent, young refugees displaced from family, sleep in parks and sheds. Older people without recourse to public funds and with health conditions, move from sofa to squat, to shelter and back again. It shouldn't be that way but it is - we want to create safe solutions.
Having worked in shelters and with people facing homelessness here in Brent for many years, the fact is that accommodation is getting harder and harder to find. And if you are without status and without income, housing options are almost non existent,
Our long term goal is to establish three houses in Brent funded by the local community for people facing such hopeless situations: one for general needs, one for women, and one for elderly and unwell people. Its not just about a roof over peoples' heads, though that is important, but to create a community of compassion, and respect.
There are many valuable and excellent charities and services in Brent and wider afield. We want to work with them too, to become a trusted local project learning from and contributing to the excellent work that is already happening across the borough.
My name is Kate Moore, Destiny House Community Pastor, based at Brent Community Hub. I had the honour of coordinating the Brent Winter Night Shelter at Crisis Skylight Harlesden, with ICIC and partners.
